Your best form point on 'The Voice'

Hardy’s use of syntax is a powerful representation of the speaker’s sense of loss. While the long sentences of the first stanzas reflect the positive sentiment expressed in remembering “when [their] day was fair,” the disjointed syntax of the final stanza accentuated the realisation that the “woman” is gone.” The semi-colon used in “Thus I; faltering forward” is particularly effective as its ungrammatical inclusion adds to the feeling of the poet falling apart. A pause, in the form of the punctuation mark, follows “I” thus adding to the sense of isolation and loss. The speaker is now alone.
